Jabiru
A new form of propulsion
The advantages of electric propulsion in aviation are easy to understand: environmental benefits, simplified maintenance, quieter and smoother operation, all while aiming for an equivalent or even higher level of performance. As such, electric propulsion is now generating the same level of interest in aviation that it did in the automotive industry over the past decade.
At this stage, however, two major technical limitations remain compared to aircraft equipped with internal combustion engines: the relative weight of alternative energy sources, particularly batteries, and the speed and convenience of energy “refueling.”
These technological challenges will eventually be overcome. And when that milestone is reached, Jabiru intends to be ready to continue supporting the propulsion needs of aviation. With the support of the Australian Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships program, Jabiru already has its first electric motor undergoing bench testing, with a first flight planned for 2025.
Jabiru’s first electric motor, the JEM, is designed as a direct alternative to the 2200 ICE. It has a design output of 83 kW peak and 40 kW continuous at 3,000 RPM, for a weight of approximately 20 kg.
If you work in aeronautical development and would like to discuss a collaboration on electric propulsion, Jabiru invites interested parties to get in touch.
